Reviews: The Best Milk Steamers And Frothers On Offer

1. Miroco Electric Milk Frother And Milk Steamer

Miroco Electric Milk Frother And Milk Steamer

Our top choice for this category, Miroco Electric Milk Frother And Milk Steamer is sure to provide thick foam. As a dependable and compact machine, it is great for the modern home that’s starved for space. And its looks and design seem more modern and likable!

Miroco Milk Frother’s vessel is double-walled insulated, so it can be picked up easily as soon as frothing is done. You can touch the frother directly with your hands and pour milk/froth directly to where you like.

It wouldn’t be a good electric milk frother if it didn’t offer more features – and this one’s feature-rich. Pour in cold milk for a cold froth or choose hot foam and let the frother do its job. The machine will heat the milk to the right temperature and then froth it.

Try The Healthiest, Tastiest Organic Coffee Ever!

Inner side of the vessel is made from non-stick coated stainless steel, which makes cleaning a breeze. Also, the stubborn burnt milk stains will be less of a problem. Overall, there are three frothing settings available:

  • Hot Airy Foam
  • Hot Dense Foam
  • Cold Milk Froth

The frother can also be used simply to heat milk, which definitely comes in handy more often than you’d think.

Miroco Electric Milk Frother And Milk Steamer has an available (usable) volume of 8 oz. You can use all of that if you’re only heating milk. For frothing milk, the max amount you can add is 3.9 oz (115 ml).

It’s a tiny volume, and if you regularly need a lot of froth, this frother simply isn’t enough. However, it’s enough to brew 1-2 cups without a hitch.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Electric and automatic milk frother and steamer
  • Compact size and design
  • The base is compact as well. It’s pretty much a flat dish
  • The vessel is double-walled and insulated, so it’s easy to maneuver
  • Can be used to heat milk
  • Works with cold or hot foam
  • Maximum available volume is 8 oz
  • Excellent value for money

2. Syosin Milk Frother, USB Rechargeable

Syosin Milk Frother USB Rechargeable

Being battery powered is pretty much a standard for handheld milk frothers. If you’re getting a battery, might as well use rechargeable ones. Better yet, get a milk frother that charges it’s batteries through USB. I mean USB sockets are common everywhere – whether it’s someone’s computer or their phone charger. Shouldn’t be a trouble to get a frother some USB action as well.

Being USB rechargeable is what drew me to the Syosin Milk Frother first. A compact, perhaps tiny handheld milk frother with USB charging. Count me in! Thankfully, it also turned out to be pretty good at frothing milk.

It has a silicone-rubber handle that makes it convenient to hold it while frothing. The 1200mAh Li-ion battery is lightweight and keeps the frother low on weight as well. Battery capacity is good enough to keep the machine going and powerful enough to make great froth.

The box includes the Syosin Milk Frother, micro USB charging cable, frothing attachment, and whisking attachment. Oh yeah… if you’re not using it for frothing, you can use it for whisking eggs, cream, etc. Don’t expect it to do any heavy-lifting for whisking.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Handheld milk frother
  • USB rechargeable (1200mAh Li-ion battery)
  • Includes frothing and whisking attachments
  • Powerful motor

3. PowerLix Milk Frother

PowerLix-Milk-Frother

PowerLix Milk Frother is perhaps the best known amongst handheld milk frothers. And for good reason – this machine is dependable, powerful, and makes great froth. It’s also our top choice for handheld milk frothers.

A battery-operated milk frother, PowerLix is powerful, dependable, and durable. The aforementioned are the three things we want from a frother, and what handheld frothers are very likely to lack. PowerLix not suffering from those shortcomings is what makes it such a great milk frother.

PowerLix milk frother requires two AA batteries to function. It’s powerful enough, yet there’s good battery life. It takes about 30 seconds to froth milk. The powerful 19000 rpm motor surely plays a big role in that.

Many user reviews suggest that batteries last about a month, even with regular use daily. The frother is easy to clean and the included stand provides convenient storage.

This frother wand is also our choice as the best handheld milk frother.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Handheld milk frother (milk frother wand)
  • Uses two AA batteries
  • Good battery life
  • Powerful frother with 19000 rpm motor
  • Fairly lightweight and convenient to use

4. Bellemain Stainless Steel Hand Pump Milk Frother

Bellemain Stainless Steel Milk Frother

Bellemain Stainless Steel Hand Pump Milk Frother does a seriously good job at frothing milk. The frother body is made entirely out of stainless steel, which gives it an extra touch of longevity.

Many manual frothers tend to be made from glass. It’s a good material for a regular French press. However, the pumping that a manual frother requires makes steel feel more comfortable. I don’t think I’ve ever broken a glass frother, but there’s always the fear of the glass carafe shattering.

It helps that this frother is well-priced, has a strong build, and is excellent at frothing. It delivers excellent microfoam that would put fully automatic frothers to shame.

The total volume for the Bellemain Stainless Steel Hand Pump Milk Frother is 14 oz. The company suggests using 7 oz of milk for frothing, though I’ll suggest going no more than 5 oz. And even that’s pushing too close. Milk volume at least doubles during frothing, so starting with 7 oz means there’s practically no room left for movement, which creates a risk for spills.

Use about 5 oz milk and you’ve got enough room for the movement of the frother and the expanding milk volume. Bellemain Stainless Steel Milk Frother is dishwasher safe and remarkably easy to clean.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Manual milk frother
  • Dependable stainless steel construction
  • Dishwasher safe
  • 14 oz total available volume
  • Makes excellent, thick microfoam

5. Secura 4 in 1 Electric Automatic Milk Frother

Secura-4-in-1-Electric-Automatic-Milk-Frother

Secura 4 in 1 Electric Automatic Milk Frother has often stood as our top pick for a fully automatic milk frother. And for good reason. It offers remarkable value for money, froths milk the right way, and offers a ton of features.

A 17 oz steel jug sits over the base. That’s enough capacity for generous doses of milk foam to a couple of cappuccinos or lattes. It works rather quickly and creates velvety microfoam with remarkable consistency.

The “4 in 1” in its name implies the four modes of function. Secura automatic milk frother can work with:

  • Hot froth
  • Cold froth
  • Hot milk
  • Hot chocolate

I have no idea why hot chocolate gets a special mention. Presumably, (and I could be wrong) 4-in-1 sounds better than 3-in-1. Anyways, this is a pretty useful appliance for frothing milk or just plain heating it.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Fully automatic milk frother
  • Very easy to use
  • Offers hot froth, cold froth, heated milk
  • Stainless steel jar is dishwasher safe
  • Top capacity at 17 oz

6. Bodum Latteo Manual Milk Frother

Bodum Latteo Manual Milk Frother

Bodum’s experience with French press surely benefits the Bodum Latteo Manual Milk Frother. If not in quality, then at least in the name! Well, it does seem to be as useful in quality too. The frother has a glass carafe/vessel and a metal filter to get the job done.

As noted earlier, I’m more comfortable with stainless steel frothers, simply because they appear more reliable. It’s rarely a pressing concern, but once you work with manual frothers, you understand pretty fast why steel seems safer. In the same vein, visual feedback is a great plus for glass body milk frothers.

You can clearly see the milk volume doubling as it is pumped. So rather than the guesswork of using steel, you know when the frothing is done. A seasoned veteran may not care about this distinction. For newbies, visual feedback is pretty important and provides an excellent perspective.

The Bodum milk frother is made from borosilicate glass and features a plunger with a single filter. The total capacity of the vessel is 8 oz – that means you don’t go beyond 3 oz when filling it with milk. Gotta give enough room for the plunger to move and the milk to expand!

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Manual milk frother
  • Maximum capacity at 8 oz
  • Good quality construction
  • Body made from borosilicate glass

7. Ikea Milk Frother

Ikea Milk Frother

Ikea Milk Frother is a good quality wand frother or handheld milk frother. It’s a fairly useful device, but there’s nothing special about it – not even a hint of some design language. It seems someone at some meeting suggested “Hey guys, how about we sell a random milk frother.” And some other random guy said yes, and thus came about the Ikea Milk Frother 100.763.20.

I suppose the design being more than a decade old plays a part, but that’s no excuse.

It needs 2 AA batteries to work, has an average motor, and does an acceptable job at frothing. The biggest aspect in favor of this frother is that it uses high-quality materials in its construction. So I guess the Ikea brand name does come in useful.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Handheld milk frother
  • Requires 2 AA batteries
  • Good quality materials used for construction
  • Average performance

8. Nespresso Aeroccino4 Milk Frother

Nespresso Aeroccino4 Milk Frother

Nespresso Aeroccino 4 Milk Frother does a lovely job of frothing milk for your cappuccino or latte. The overall design of this Aeroccino Milk Frother is quite similar to our top pick in this category, the Miroco Electric Milk Frother And Milk Steamer. However, this Nespresso Milk Frother is far more expensive.

As a comparative positive, it is easier to clean since the frother is dishwasher safe. On the other side of the same set, this one doesn’t have double-walled insulation. It’s rarely trouble and the handle works just fine to move the jar. The only reason I bring it up is because I prefer the double-walled insulated construction. It simply feels more convenient.

Nespresso Aeroccino 4 offers four modes. These are hot milk, cold foam, and two types of hot foam. Overall, a good, though expensive pick for your milk frothing needs.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Automatic milk frother
  • Offers cold foam, hot milk, and two types of hot milk foam
  • Expensive
  • Compact
  • Easy to use

9. Capresso froth Select Automatic Milk Frother

Capresso froth Select Automatic Milk Frother

Capresso froth Select Automatic Milk Frother comes with a clean, elegant design. The blue dial on the silver body looks very interesting, to say the least. Its base is topped by a stainless steel jar that holds 20 oz.

Capresso milk frother has one of the largest volumes available and can be pretty useful when brewing large batches. On that note, the automatic milk frother is pretty quick at its job, so the availability of frothed milk isn’t much of a problem.

It offers four options, which are cold froth, hot froth, hot milk, and chocolate milk. The stainless steel pitcher is dishwasher safe, and like others in its category, includes a transparent lid. Overall, the frother is powerful with good blending power, looks good, is easy to use, and easy to maintain.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Fully automatic milk frother
  • Offers four options: hot foam, cold foam, hot milk, and hot chocolate milk
  • Quick to froth milk
  • Easy to operate
  • Dishwasher safe stainless steel pitcher
  • Good looks and design

10. Casara Milk Frother, Electric Milk Frother and Steamer

Casara Milk Frother Electric Milk Frother and Steamer

A factor that sets this milk steamer apart from its competition is the more prominent base. While some automatic milk frothers have tiny bases as small as disks, Casara Milk Steamer has a base that pretty much dominates the aesthetic.

The Breville Milk Frother BMF600XL has a similar profile. Of course, there are probably a ton of other steamers with similar designs, but these two warrant a mention due to their relative popularity.

Casara Milk Steamer and Frother has a 17 oz jug to handle its tasks. That’s a fairly large volume and can be useful in brewing 2-3 cups of cappuccino or espresso. It’s pretty quick to heat as well. You can expect the frother to go from cold milk to hot froth in less than 2 minutes.

As with most automatic milk frothers, there are four options available here as well:

  • Cold froth
  • Hot froth (cappuccino)
  • Hot froth (latte)
  • Hot milk (or chocolate milk)

The steel jug has a sturdy build and is dishwasher safe.

Large buttons at the base of the frother make it easy to power it on/off and choose the preferred function. They are oversized and useful for a lot of people.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Fully automatic milk steamer/frother
  • Four available modes cold foam, two hot foams, hot chocolate
  • Easy to operate with simple controls and LED feedback
  • 17 oz pitcher capacity
  • Good value for money
  • Stainless steel pitcher is dishwasher safe

11. Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother

Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother

At just 10 oz available volume, Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother is one of the smaller frothers. It’s also great value and the brand name instills confidence in the product. The frother is available at an excellent price and does a great job. However, it isn’t free from problems. And that’s where I think the brand name is oversold.

First, it seems Bodum has been overly generous in placing the “max” line. It is way higher than where it should be and therefore runs the risk of spilling the froth and milk. Also, there are no specific froth options here. At just a slightly higher price, you get plenty of milk frothers and steamers that offer multiple frothing options.

That said, there are plenty of good qualities here that qualify this frother for a place on our list. The low pricing substantially reduces the bump for automatic entry-level milk frothers. And its 10 oz volume is more than comfortable for brewing a great cuppa.

Plus, the milk heating and frothing are pretty much on point. It delivers thick, velvety microfoam with a wonderful texture.

Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother is compact and barely takes any space. The interior has a non-stick coating, though it could do a better job.

Overall, I’d say it’s a useful pick for someone who rarely needs a frother. It’s also great for beginners who want a quick milk frother with a low price tag.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Automatic milk frother
  • Heats and froths milk
  • Very compact design
  • 10 oz capacity
  • Good quality foam
  • Low price

12. Aicok Electric Milk Steamer

Aicok Electric Milk Steamer

Aicok Electric Milk Steamer is a compact setup with looks that remind users of the Aeroccino. In terms of functions, it is different from the Nespresso Aeroccino and offers a range of options at lower prices. Well, significantly lower than the Aeroccino.

It has a double-walled construction that makes it convenient to pick and maneuver this steamer even if it has hot frothed milk in it. At a total volume of 8.2 oz, this is quite small but should be good enough for a single cup.

Interiors of the pitcher have a non-stick coating. Even so, cleaning can be a bit challenging. Besides, the pitcher isn’t dishwasher safe, so cleaning has to be manual.

Available options here are hot milk, hot milk froth, and cold milk froth. All of these are managed through a single button, depending on how long you press the button. It isn’t very intuitive and a better control would have gone a long way. Maybe stay with the tried and tested formula and just stick more buttons on there!

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Automatic milk frother
  • Available options are hot foam, cold foam, hot milk
  • Total pitcher volume is 8.2 oz
  • Single-button operation, which can get a bit annoying

13. GRUNEN WOLKEN Milk Frother Handheld

GRUNEN WOLKEN Milk Frother Handheld

GRUNEN WOLKEN Milk Frother is a wand-style or handheld milk frother. It’s a fairly powerful frother, quite capable of giving the reigning champion PowerLix a run for its money. Like most handheld frothers, this one too runs on two AA batteries.

They claim a six hour runtime on the batteries, which is good enough to last for a very long time. In most cases, it barely takes a couple of minutes to get frothing done. So, the good estimate of battery life is quite encouraging. Of course, it would be dumb to take the number at face value, but there doesn’t seem to be a terrible reduction in practical use either.

The frother has a good design and is made from high-quality materials. A stand is included to make storage and management easier. GRUNEN WOLKEN Milk Frother is lightweight and easy to maneuver. It is also powerful enough to froth milk at a brisk pace.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Handheld milk frother
  • Requires 2 AA batteries
  • Good battery life
  • Fairly powerful

14. Ninja Coffee Bar Easy Milk Frother with Press Froth Technology

Ninja Coffee Bar Easy Milk Frother with Press Froth Technology

Okay, I have no idea what the Press Froth Technology means, and I seriously doubt if Ninja does either. In all likeliness, it’s about the filter getting fatter and some marketing buzzwords about how that helps frothing.

Well, it just might, but the foam doesn’t seem to be any better than that created by any “regular” manual frother. Skipping all that, this is a great milk frother. You’ll have to do about the same amount of work as other frothers to enjoy the quality milk foam. In all fairness, it works as good as the top of the chart frothers and creates the highly-desired velvety microfoam.

The body is made from glass and can be easily transferred to the microwave for heating. Ninja Coffee Bar Easy Milk Frother is also dishwasher safe, so the maintenance effort becomes less troubling.

There is an element of the brand name affecting the price. Then again, there’s also the effect of the brand name making this frother more dependable. Overall, Ninja doesn’t disappoint with the frother, even though the price is higher than its direct competitors.

Milk Frother/Steamer Highlights

  • Manual milk frother
  • Excellent quality froth
  • Very easy to use, though requires manual effort
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Dependable

Making The Frother Selection: Electric Or Manual?

Broadly speaking, we can divide milk frothers into three categories:

  • Fully automatic milk frother (electricity operated)
  • Handheld milk frother (battery powered)
  • Manual milk frother (manual)

You could also dig up some electric powered handheld milk frother (a.k.a milk frother wand), but that’s an increasingly rare item. So rather than digging into exceptions, we’ll stick to general expectations.

What Makes The Best Electric Milk Frother?

The simple answer here is convenience. For most automatic milk frothers, all the user needs to do is hit a button. The machine will automatically heat the milk to the right temperature and froth it. Many frothers also offer different frothing options for latte and cappuccino (and thus related drinks). If you’re a purist looking for the right kind of foam, this should do the trick.

Since the milk is being heated anyway, most electric milk frothers also take the opportunity to simply offer hot milk. It’s often needed in a household, especially one with kids, so a quick heating solution that doesn’t boil milk over is more than welcome. Some machines also add the twist of hot chocolate to the mix, which is a great pick by itself.

Functions and features form a big part of our decision making. An equally important aspect of the best electric milk frother is its maintenance. It needs to be cleaned after every use. To add to that, there is the ever-present risk of milk burning or sticking to the bottom and sides of the vessel. Most try to get around the problem by including non-stick coatings. Sometimes it works, sometimes it adds to the pain!

This isn’t as big a problem with the more conventional and larger pitcher/jug type frothers. The jug is easily reached and is dishwasher safe. However, small and compact frothers like Miroco, Bodum Bistro, etc. must contend with the cleaning risks.

Judging The Manual Milk Frother

Let’s start with the obvious, the manual milk frother is pretty much a French press. In fact, if you have a French press you can pretty much learn how to froth milk and get good froth the first time. Manual milk frothers (including the French press) are labor-intensive.

The effort pays off pretty well, and the froth quality is second to none. Manual milk frothers come the closest to automatic frothers in terms of foam quality. The microfoam is of top quality and the texture is enjoyable.

A manual frother usually needs pumping for 30-60 seconds. As the froth forms, it offers greater resistance to movement and you have to put in more effort. That doesn’t sound like much, but once you start pumping off, getting an automatic frother seems like the smart idea! (Or maybe I’m just getting old).

An increasing desire to shout “get off my lawn” pretty much confirms it.

Handheld Milk Frothers Or Frothing Wands

Handheld frothers take a nice spot. They require less effort than manual frothers and are priced significantly lower than automatic frothers. Additionally, the size and the fact that they can be battery-operated makes them convenient to use and easy to carry along.

It takes some practice learning your way around a handheld frother. But once you do, it’s quite simple and rewarding.

As for foam quality, handheld frothers are usually lower on the totem pole than automatic or manual frothers. Even so, the foam quality can be considered fairly good.

Working With Various Frothing Methods

Though the aforementioned three are the most commonly used, there are other ways to go about frothing milk. It isn’t that difficult, but knowing how to use a milk frother goes a long way in getting things right the first time. Knowing the basics can ensure you hit the microfoam with the right mouthfeel the first time.

The Best Milk Steamers — What Are They On About?

While the end goal is generally the same, there is a small difference between milk steamers and frothers. The terms are often used interchangeably, often to denote foamed milk. Yet, a consideration of the differences has to be made.

Milk steamers generally rely on the power of steam to froth milk. More often than not, they’re connected to espresso machines where the pressure and heated water create a good amount of steam.

A valve can release this trapped steam, which flows under pressure to milk and proceeds to froth it. The approach is simple, elegant, and straightforward. However, it also needs the most skill.

Something else to note is that the steam can water down the milk. Or, there may not be enough steam to meet your milk frothing requirements. That’s why the other methods are generally more preferable.

It should be noted that though several espresso machines and coffee machines come with milk frothing options, they aren’t necessarily steamers. Many machines (especially those on the higher-end of the spectrum) use automatic milk frothers.

Several machines come with whisks attached (like with handheld frothers) and enable the user to employ them for frothing.

For example, the Keurig milk frother on the Keurig K cafe is practically an automatic milk frother. In the same vein, the Keurig K-Latte uses a frother that behaves quite like the Nespresso Aeroccino. For that matter, the Starbucks milk frother for the Verismo is in the same boat.

If you see a pattern emerging, it’s that conventional milk frothers are easier to handle than milk steamers. Frothers also provide relatively better results.

Quick Tips For Getting The Best Froth

There are some basic rules to follow if you want the best quality of froth. Automatic frothers pretty much handle everything, so these apply to other frothing methods. Let’s dive in!

  • Temperature: Ideal milk temperature for frothing is 140-155 degrees Fahrenheit (60-68 C). Using a thermometer is a good bet, but those with culinary experience pretty much wing it. Remember that the milk must not boil. Freshly boiled milk won’t lend itself well to frothing.
  • Using the Milk: Skimmed milk is recommended for most beginners because it is easier to handle and holds its foam for longer. Regular or whole milks usually work better.
  • Milk alternatives: How milk frothers work with milk alternatives is somewhat debatable, given the large variety. Soy milk and almond milk get along just fine (provided they have enough protein content) given their consistency is similar to regular-skimmed milk. Others might have a problem.
  • Grooming: This implies bursting the undesirable large bubbles showing up in the milk froth. We want a consistent microfoam, not a mix of large bubbles. A few of those will always creep up, so a quick tap on the jar or bursting the bubble should do it.
  • Microwave: Milk, especially in manual frothers, tends to get cooler after frothing. Since the manual frother won’t heat the milk so the better option is to microwave it for a few seconds. That will heat the milk up and also has the effect of stabilizing the foam. Whatever you do, don’t let the milk boil.
  • Milk volume: As you add milk to a vessel or jug, keep an eye on its volume. On frothing, the milk expands to twice its original volume. Filling the vessel too much is bound to result in spills. Stay comfortable below half the mark. In fact, I’d recommend staying somewhere between one-third to half the capacity of the vessel.

Watch The Noise Your Frother Makes

Milk frothers can get noisy – like LOUD. Handheld frothers aren’t as offensive with noise as they keep their sounds on the down-low. Manual frothers, on the other hand, can be quite loud. There’s quite a lot going on during those seconds of manual pumping.

It gets noisy and it gets loud. And if the frother vessel/carafe and plunger don’t agree, the noise can be much louder.

That said, automatic milk frothers are the worst offenders when it comes to noise. The whisks will be running and creating noise. But the greater noise comes from the heating side. Many automatic frothers use an induction-based heating system for the milk. It is efficient and quick. It also tends to get overly noisy.

Other methods are as noisy. I mention the induction cooking style for its relative popularity. While we’re on topic, induction heaters/cookers are a good pick for regular cooking as well!

FAQs Related To Milk Frothers And Milk Steamers

Can you froth cold milk?

Yes, cold froth is regular, useful, and popular. It won’t find a way to your regular cappuccino, but it’s a great hit with iced coffee, cold brew, and even the good ol’ iced latte.

Many people insist that cold froth has a better microfoam and texture. It also tends to last longer than its hot siblings. There are no special procedures to be followed, just froth it the regular way. If you’re using a fully automatic frother, remember not to engage the heating!

Does almond milk froth up?

Milk alternatives can be notoriously difficult to froth. Almond milk, like most milk alternatives can froth up, but there can be problems with consistency. Even different almond milks can have different results when frothing. Higher protein content (and by extension higher almond content) lends itself well to frothing.

Other alternative milk options, like coconut milk can have a tougher time with frothing.

Can I steam milk without a steamer?

There are ways to steam (or froth) milk without a steamer. The key to frothing/steaming milk is aerating it. While other methods exist they usually don’t provide as good a result as using a steamer/frother. Some methods include using a whisk, hand blender, immersion blender, or the pulling method.

The Key To Getting High Quality Aerated Milk

The most suitable way to quality aerated milk with microfoam and great texture is to use the right tools. The best milk steamer will aerate the milk sufficiently. Similarly, the milk frothers use a whisk or similar attachments to aerate milk and get that velvety microfoam with a delicious mouthfeel.

Our top choice for the best milk frother is the Miroco Electric Milk Frother And Milk Steamer. If you want some handheld frother magic (wand), the PowerLix Milk Frother will make a solid choice. And if you’re willing to put in some effort on a manual milk frother, take a look at the Bellemain Stainless Steel Hand Pump Milk Frother.

The feature range can vary quite widely on frothers. So take a look at the options in this guide, and you’ll find something that is the right fit for your needs.
